In 2019, I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from falling down a flight of stairs. During my recovery, I experienced significant physical and cognitive impairment due to my TBI symptoms. As I was pursuing my master's degree in User Experience Design, my experience with impairment led to my interest in digital accessibility. 

Many people experience impairment everyday, which can be permanent (e.g. congenital blindness), temporary (e.g. a minor injury to the eye), or can be situational (e.g. trying to read in bright sunlight). Impairment can be cognitive or physical, and have a variety of impacts on how a person will interact with a digital interface. 

For example, during my TBI recovery I experienced visual and auditory impairment (physical) which caused me to struggle with low-contrast designs, unexpected or abrasive sound effects, and understanding speech elements without captions. I also experienced cognitive impairment, which made it more difficult for me to interpret large blocks of complex text, complicated instructions and multi-step processes. 

Today, I specialize in digital accessibility and usability, and helping emerging technology and entertainment companies to create beautiful, user-friendly designs that everyone can easily access. 

While employing accessbility in web designs is a huge help to the disabled community, it also makes it easier for everyone to use your website, which results in higher user retention and satisfaction.
